THE NOAKES TRIAL

Welcome to Foodmed.net’s one-stop exclusive coverage and unique insight into the “Nutrition Trial of the 21st Century”
as the hearing against world-renowned South African scientist Prof Tim Noakes is known. Here, you’ll find all the history
and background of the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) case against him.

The HPCSA has charged Prof Noakes, a world-renowned scientist,  with “unprofessional conduct for giving unconventional advice on a social network (Twitter)”. That was for a single tweet way back in February 2014 saying that good first foods for infant weaning are low-carb, high-fat. In others words, he was saying: give infants meat, fish, chicken, eggs dairy and vegetables.

The hearing resumes in Cape Town from April 4 and 5, 2017, for legal argument from lawyers for both sides. Thereafter, the chair of the panel hearing the charge against him, Pretoria advocate Joan Adams, will rule. Watch this space! For Live Tweeting follow me @MarikaSboros

DID SA, UK SCIENTISTS COMMIT FRAUD TO SILENCE NOAKES?

By Marika Sboros Did South African scientists really commit scientific fraud to silence Prof Tim Noakes? The case against them is building. The US peer-reviewed journal PLoS ONE is now investigating the Naudé Review, which it published in July 2014. The Health Professions Council of SA used it as key evidence to charge Noakes with…

Why ADSA bullies desperately seeking to nail Noakes?

By Marika Sboros There is so much that is so bizarre about dietitians trying to bully world-famous scientist Prof Tim Noakes into silence that I hardly know where to start. Even more bizarre is the Health Professions Council of SA helping dietitians to do that. The HPCSA tells me it is pursuing its appeal against…

NOAKES ‘ENERGISED, WRATHFUL’ AS HPCSA GOES AFTER HIM AGAIN

By Marika Sboros So, the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) has appealed the not guilty verdict for Prof Tim Noakes. His lawyers are furious and up for the fight ahead. Noakes is “strangely elated”. He says that it will “allow the exposure of much about which the South African public would otherwise have remained…

ADSA FACES GROWING BACKLASH FOR ‘RECORD 17 LIES’ ABOUT NOAKES

By Marika Sboros The Association for Dietetics in SA (ADSA) is facing a global backlash for its role in the trial of scientist Prof Tim Noakes. The backlash has grown faster in the wake of an ambiguous statement that ADSA released after the comprehensive verdict of not guilty for Noakes on a charge of unprofessional conduct…

NOAKES VERDICT: HE WON THE BATTLE BUT THE WAR GOES ON

By Marika Sboros The ashes have settled on the unequivocal not guilty verdict for Prof Tim Noakes but what’s next? Will there be a scientific phoenix rising? Any prospect of even a breath of fresh evidential air flowing through stale halls of “conventional” dietary advice? Not if the dietitians involved in the case against him…

NOAKES NOT GUILTY – ‘OF SOMETHING OR OTHER’

Foodmed.net is running a series on what the verdict in the case against Prof Tim Noakes really means. First off is Scottish GP Dr Malcolm Kendrick. He says that Noakes won his case, but any scientist looking on gets a clear message from the establishment: ‘If you say things we don’t like, we will attack…

NOAKES NOT GUILTY! NO HARM PROVEN, NO LAWS BROKEN

By Marika Sboros Prof Tim Noakes is not guilty of unprofessional conduct. When Pretoria advocate Joan Adams announced the verdict yesterday, the hearing erupted into applause and cheers. Adams said that the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) had not proved any of its case on a balance of probabilities. It had not proven any…

NOAKES TRIAL: DAY OF RECKONING FOR A FEROCIOUS ‘FABLE’?

By Marika Sboros There’s something absolutely “fabulous” about the ferocity with which the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) has prosecuted Prof Tim Noakes. I don’t mean fabulous in the informal sense of “very good” – as in a “fabulous holiday” or “fabulous riches”. I mean the Oxford dictionary’s formal definition of fabulous as…

NOAKES TRIAL: WHO REALLY DISHES UP DANGEROUS ADVICE?

By Marika Sboros Prof Tim Noakes gave scientifically correct information in his tweet, his lawyers have argued. His statement to wean babies onto LCHF (low-carb, high-fat) is correct. Thus it is not even “unconventional”. It is also not dangerous or life-threatening, as the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) claims. Self-evidently, the HPCSA cannot prosecute…

NOAKES TRIAL: DID DISGRUNTLED DIETITIANS SET HIM UP?

By Marika Sboros   Prof Tim Noakes had no patient on Twitter and his tweet caused no harm to anyone. So, what did two days of heated legal argument prove in the case against him? It clearly is an “unprecedented prosecution” of a distinguished scientist, as Noakes’ legal team describes it. Even counsel for the…

NOAKES: ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM PROVES HE’S INNOCENT?

By Marika Sboros Prof Tim Noakes is guilty of unprofessional conduct on “a balance of probability”, advocate Ajay Bhoopchand argued yesterday. He also accused Noakes of using the Health Professions Council of SA’s (HPCSA) hearing to “settle personal scores”. Johannesburg senior counsel Michael Van der Nest argued that Noakes is not guilty of unprofessional conduct.  The…

NOAKES AND THE WOMAN WHO HOLDS THE KEY TO HIS FATE

By Marika Sboros What’s really behind the prosecution of scientist Prof Tim Noakes? Is it just a single tweet to a breastfeeding mother, which even she said she didn’t take seriously? Was one dietitian really so “horrified” that she reported Noakes – even though she dishes out the same information? What of claims of a doctor-patient…

NOAKES VS ILSI ‘QUEENPINS’ TRYING TO NAIL HIM

By Marika Sboros So, it has taken a brilliant US investigative journalist to expose all the food industry’s “biggies” trying to silence scientist Prof Tim Noakes. True, signs of food industry involvement were there from the start. CrossFit’s Russ Greene joins the dots to confirm it. However, Greene adds damning dots that don’t just implicate…

Zinn to parents: Don’t feed cereals to your babies!

By Marika Sboros Parents should not feed cereals to their infants as first foods, says New Zealand-based dietitian and academic, Dr Caryn Zinn. Zinn (pictured right) said this in her evidence in chief at the trial of University of Cape Town emeritus professor Tim Noakes, It went to the heart of the matter of the Health Professions…

ZINN: ‘UNETHICAL FOR DIETITIANS NOT TO OFFER LCHF’

By Marika Sboros Three things embarrass New Zealand-based dietitian and academic Dr Caryn Zinn most these days. At university, she never questioned what lecturers said about diet. In her private practice, she prescribed low-fat diets to adults and children for 15 years.  As a university lecturer, she told students low-carb diets were dangerous. Zinn said…

NOAKES ‘GUILTY’ VERDICT DEVOID OF ALL TRUTH: ADV JOAN ADAMS

By Marika Sboros The Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) released a press release today saying it has found Prof Tim Noakes guilty of unprofessional conduct. That’s not possible, of course, since the case against him has not concluded. The HPCSA’s  Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) that is hearing the charge against Noakes, hasn’t even heard…

NOAKES TRIAL: DIETITIANS TRYING TO COVER THEIR BACKS?

By Marika Sboros Are the dietitians behind the trial of Prof Tim Noakes attempting to distance themselves from the complaint to avoid the consequences that may flow if the ruling goes his way? Lawyers acting for Noakes have introduced documents, which seem to suggest that’s the case. The last day of the Health Professions Council…

TEICHOLZ: HOW LOW-FAT DIETS CAN KILL YOU

By Marika Sboros At the heart of the trial of scientist Prof Tim Noakes is the diet-heart hypothesis that saturated fat causes heart disease. US investigative journalist Nina Teicholz focused on the hypothesis in her testimony in Noakes’ favour. That was at the fourth session of the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) hearing in Cape…

TEICHOLZ EXPLODES FAT BOMBS IN NOAKES TRIAL

By Marika Sboros The Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) has a few problems in its prosecution of scientist Prof Tim Noakes. One is research showing that these diets deprive infants and children of much-needed fats and other vital nutrients during their most formative years. Another is the effects of low-fat diets on heart health….

NOAKES TRIAL: ‘ANGEL’ HARCOMBE AIMS AT ITS HEART

By Marika Sboros If South African scientist Prof Tim Noakes were enough to raise cardiologists’ blood pressure into the danger zone, British obesity researcher Dr Zoë Harcombe’s could fell them with an instant heart attack. Noakes once memorably called statins “the single most ineffective drug ever invented”.  In her evidence at the Health Professions Council…

MISTAKE OR MISCHIEF: SCIENTISTS IN PLOT TO NAIL NOAKES?

By Marika Sboros Mistake or mischief? Did top scientists at Stellenbosch and Cape Town universities honestly make so many mistakes in a major study? Did they really not know the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) would use it to charge scientist Prof Tim Noakes? Or was there something a little more contrived behind their…

NOAKES: CASE AGAINST HIM FALLING APART? PART 2

By Marika Sboros Something about South African scientist Prof Tim Noakes and his views on the role of carbohydrate and fat gets up the Health Professions Council of SA’s nose faster than a cocaine hit. The fourth session of the HPCSA hearing against Noakes began in Cape Town on October 17. Noakes told the hearing…

NOAKES: CASE AGAINST HIM FALLING APART? PART 1

By Marika Sboros At the close of the first week of the fourth session of the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) hearing against scientist Prof Tim Noakes, there were signs of  terminal decline in the case against him. Whether you see signs as auspicious or ominous –  or see any at all – depends,…

NOAKES: THE MAN HPCSA HOPES WILL NAIL HIM

By Marika Sboros Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) advocate Ajay Bhoopchand has spent nearly two days cross-examining Prof Tim Noakes. He hasn’t got far in achieving any major concessions.  He still has time, but will he really be the one to nail Noakes? Bhoopchand is clearly keeping for last his attempt to force concessions…

NOAKES: ‘DOG DID NOT BARK’ – PROOF OF HIS INNOCENCE?

By Marika Sboros There was more drama, intrigue and “silent dogs” on day one of the trial of South African scientist Prof Tim Noakes in Cape Town on October 17. Noakes resumed his evidence-in-chief and began to untangle what he believes the case against him is really about. He also started to reveal just who he believes may…

NOAKES TRIAL: HPCSA FAILS TO CLIP ‘ANGELS’ WINGS

By Marika Sboros The first day of the fourth session of the nutrition trial of scientist Prof Tim Noakes resumed on a note of high drama in Cape Town today. As I thought it might do, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) tried to stop Noakes calling two of his three expert witnesses. However,…

NOAKES REALLY IS A ‘PUBLIC DANGER’ – CARDIOLOGISTS

By Marika Sboros University of Cape Town cardiologists say Prof Tim Noakes is a true “cholesterol denialist”. They accused him of being one in a letter to the media in 2012. They say the accusation holds true and he’s a danger to the public. Cholesterol and hearts are a major focus of the Health Professions…

NOAKES TRIAL: WILL HPCSA TRY TO CLIP TIM’S ANGELS’ WINGS?

By Marika Sboros Prof Tim Noakes and his legal dream team must think all their birthdays have come at once. “Tim’s Angels”, the nutrition science equivalent of “Charlie’s Angels” in the hit TV series, are flying in to be expert witnesses for him in the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) hearing against him. Proudly…

NOAKES TRIAL: COULD CARDIOLOGISTS BE AT ITS HEART?

By Marika Sboros I’ve been thinking: could cardiologists be at the heart of the case against world-renowned scientist Prof Tim Noakes? The pun is intentional. Noakes really does seem to raise cardiologists’ blood pressure into the stratosphere with his views on low-carb, high-fat (LCHF). Noakes’ trial on a charge of unprofessional conduct resumes in Cape…

NOAKES: ‘IT’S THE FATTY LIVER DISEASE, STUPID!’ PART 2

DOCTORS often terrify patients out of their wits for no good reason, says University of Cape Town emeritus professor Tim Noakes. It’s not because doctors are bad people. They just aren’t all that jacked up on science, says Noakes, a world-renowned scientist. They don’t know how to tell relative from absolute risk.  Many doctors don’t know that they…

NOAKES TRIAL: ‘TROJAN HORSES’ WORKING IN HIS FAVOUR?

The first day of the HPCSA’s hearing against Noakes in Cape Town in November 2015 could not have gone better for him if he had scripted it…
