COVID19: IS VITAMIN D A ‘CURE’ OR FREE ‘SNAKE OIL’?

Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour of miracle “cures” for COVID19. Is there really such a thing as a cure for the latest coronavirus infection rampaging across the globe?

Of course not. And if there were, you can bet your bottom dollar that whoever dreamt one up would already be trumpeting it globally. And – hopefully – singing a resonating, scientific-research song in support.

But is anything coming even vaguely close to a COVID19 cure? Or at the very least, as close as modern medicine is able to come at this trying time? And could vitamin D possibly be “it”?

Scottish medical doctor, author, speaker and sceptic Malcolm Kendrick believes it could be. Which is why I heartily recommend his latest blog as it is up to his usual, irreverent, evidence-based standards.

COVID-19: BIGGEST RISK IS ‘NOT THE VIRUS’!

By Marika Sboros

COVID-19 is another case of a pandemic spreading fear, fiction, panic and chaos faster than the virus itself. The numbers involved certainly are frightening – and breathtaking.

They’re not surprising for a new strain of the coronavirus family that targets lungs and airways.

At last count, and just four months since COVID-19 first appeared in China’s Hubei province, the virus has affected 144 countries. The global death toll has topped 11,000, according to Worldometer, with confirmed cases of infection over 270,000. (By the time I finished writing that last sentence and you finished reading it, those numbers were out of date.)

Vitamin D: is it snake-oil for snake-oil disease?

By Marika Sboros

Nutrition science is looking decidedly dodgy these days. One reason is the love affair with vitamins, a century after scientists discovered them.

That affair has spawned the billion-dollar global supplement industry. It has also created “pseudo-diseases” in its wake, says British geneticist Prof Tim Spector. One of those pseudo-diseases is Vitamin D deficiency.

Spector is professor of genetic epidemiology and director of the TwinsUK Registry, at Kings College London. Spector has looked at another confounding variable in nutrition research these days: We have ignored a new “virtual” organ in our bodies for the digestive and endocrine system, he says. It is the microbiome that he calls our “second brain”.

Vitamins: Kendrick on which ones you really need and why!

Confused about which vitamins to take or if you need to take any at all? You are not alone. Just ask Scottish GP Dr Malcolm Kendrick. Kendrick is a heart specialist as well as a GP, author, speaker and sceptic. That doesn’t mean he calls himself a cardiologist.

However, he knows a lot more than most cardiologists know when it comes to the real causes of heart disease. He also knows more than many doctors about the effects of diet on heart and overall health.

In this feature, Kendrick meant to write about stress, mental health and heart health. Instead, he says that people keep asking about vitamin supplements. So he looks at which ones really are likely to make a difference to your health. And he looks at why the pharmaceutical industry is so keen to persuade you not to take vitamins. You may be in for a big surprise. – Marika Sboros
