  • Profile

South African-born Dr Simon Johnson is a knee and shoulder orthopaedic surgeon in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand who actively promotes low-carb, high-healthy-fat (LCHF) diets to his patients to boost health and prevent disease. Dr Johnson has limited his practice to knee and shoulder surgery because he believes that a limited scope of practice is the best way to deliver repeatable high-quality service. His special interests lie in uni-compartmental (or partial) knee replacements and arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery and nutrition as a powerful preventative measure. He recognises the role that obesity plays in his patients and says that the condition often precludes being able to operate on them. He believes that official dietary guidelines need a complete overhaul because people want to follow rules and comply. “Even if the rules are wrong and onsensical, they will still follow them – and that applies to doctors, too,” he says.

As an active member of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Training Committee, he participates regularly in the education and training of orthopaedic registrars. Dr Johnson graduated as a medical doctor from the University of the Witwatersrand Wits university where also specialised in orthopaedic surgery and later completed his training training in England. He worked with Prof Tim Noakes in 1995 as an elective student.
